Some of the most common threats to these pets are sexual abuse, assaults with firearms and torture, many of them committed by children and adolescents, said Alicia Flores, director of the association Ecocanis of Assisi.
“Animal abuse is a reflection of what is going on in the city. Animals are beings more vulnerable. They are the first to be affected. And right now, they are still children and adolescents who mistreat you more,” he said.
The organization says it has filed 35 complaints with the State Attorney General’s office (FGE) so far this year.
Between them, said Flowers, there are seven for alleged sexual abuse, two for shots against and other injuries with knives.
According to the activist, the organization that directs received almost 40 complaints per week about alleged acts of abuse, which, he said, are investigated before proceeding to denounce them to the authorities.
In this context, he said, that group and others from different states are joining a national initiative that seeks to in Chihuahua and other latitudes amend the legislation in such a way that the animals are not considered to be physically fit ‘things’, but feeling beings.
“Thousands of animals die at home, where they spend months or weeks to be able to obtain a warrant and enter. Die of hunger and thirst before you can get the order to take them out because it is private property,” he said.
He commented that, for activists, this factor has been a barrier to ensure the well-being of pets.
Just in July, the Direction of Ecology of the Municipality reported that the complaints for animal abuse were rising in the past few months.
In that time, Jurgen Ganser Carbajal, owner of the unit, reported that in the first half of this year, had received 246 complaints concerning that reason.
Some of the most common, he noted, are confining dogs in small spaces, unsuitable for mobility, and chain them to different objects on the roofs of the homes, where can not be covered from the rays of the sun.
