Anti-terrorism training, networking over 50, and police K9 training – The Boston Globe

An anti-terrorism education effort at the University of Massachusetts Lowell has been awarded $1 million from the US Department of Justice. Operation 250 was created by UMass Lowell students to teach people to recognize and avoid falling into ISIS recruitment methods online. The federal grant will allow researchers to expand the program and evaluate its effectiveness over the next two years.

The Danvers Council on Aging will host a networking group for people over age 50 seeking jobs. The meetings will be held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The second Tuesday will be at the Danvers Senior Center and the fourth will be at the Peabody Senior Center. Meetings will include guest speakers, access to hiring managers, and support from a human resources career coach. The Boston Police Canine Academy conducted a training at Woburn Toyota last month. Fifteen police K-9 teams used the space for an in-service training required for working dogs and handlers. According to a news release by the car dealership, Amesbury Police K9 Unit Officer Tommy Nichols, who led the training, called the space a “training unicorn” because of its multiple rooms, stairwells, electricity, doors and windows for the team to navigate. Teams came from departments in Amesbury, Billerica, Chelmsford, Essex County, Methuen, Revere, Salisbury, Somerville, Boston, and New Hampshire.

Preschoolers can “imagine, sing, and learn” about terns and geese at Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center in Newburyport on Friday, Nov. 9. The program includes hands-on science activities, music and movement, a themed snack, and an outdoor adventure. The program will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m., meeting at the education center at 1 Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport. The Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office was recognized as a “national best practice” for its opioid treatment program in jail. The National Sheriffs’ Association and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care recognized the department’s Medication Assisted Treatment and Directed Opioid Recovery (MATADOR) program in October. A report two years into the program’s 2015 start found that individuals leaving jails and prisons are 120 times more likely to die of an overdose than the rest of the adult population. According to the department, the program reduced the rate of reoffending from 90 to 23 percent.

Eastern Bank recently honored US Representative Niki Tsongas with its Community Advocacy Award for her work on issues impacting women in the region, including Andover, Haverhill, Lowell, Lawrence, and Concord. A news release from the bank cited her efforts on fighting sexual assault in the military, pushing for gender-specific body armor, affordable childcare and women’s access to health care. The bank also highlighted her support for tax relief for small businesses and the use of innovative technology in her district. The bank is celebrating its 200th anniversary by recognizing people in New England who are focusing on issues affecting women.
