Just one year ago, a Kingsport resident who happens to be a professional service dog trainer donated a young English Labrador Retriever named Charlee to the city’s police force.
Months of training has led the pup earning his place among fellow officers.
A KPD report issued Wednesday said Charlee and his handler Sgt. Kevin Hite recently completed explosives detection courses with both the Police Canine Association of America and National Narcotic Detector Dog Association. The achievement was formally recognized Tuesday during a session of the Kingsport Board of Mayor and Aldermen. City resident Bill Creasey was also recognized for his donation to the department.
Charlee and Hite now work in the KPD Strategic Operations Unit.
