Ely, the elephant that a group of environmentalists wants to rescue … – Animal Politico

For the organization Project Great Ape of Mexico, the elephant Ely, the only one that survives from six years ago in the zoo of San Juan of Aragon, to the north of the City of Mexico, is growing more and more sick. The have been monitored during two years, the last two months every day for four hours, and ensure that it presents “aberrant behavior” because they eat their own feces and rocks to bump without sense.

With this evidence, several organisations animal protectors opened a request in Change.org for Ely to be moved to a sanctuary and presented a complaint before the Procuraduría General de la República (PGR), for animal abuse and violations of Law of Protection of Wildlife.

Who is Ely?

At 35 years, Ely is the last elephant of three who lived in the Zoo San Juan de Aragon. This is a copy of elephant loxodonta african, species that lives around 70 years maximum on average; however, according to organizations such as Project Great Ape, the animal’s health deteriorated from the 9th of April, when, to his partner Maggie, who according to the authorities was 60 years of age, he was given the euthanasia, because she had an advanced osteoarthritis.

“Ely also has osteoarthritis or degenerative, that has a lot to do with the space where it is, the concrete in a timely manner, is what hurts their feet”, explains the director of Project Great Ape in Mexico, Paulina Bermudez Landa, who states that the health and conduct of Ely have worsened.

According to the director-general of Zoos and Wild Life in the City of Mexico, Claudia Lewy, the elephant was rescued in 2012 —when the Government of the capital paid more than 3.4 billion pesos— of the Circus Hermanos Vazquez, and, since then, “is in a very good state of health and your mood has improved”, thanks to the administration of treatments, changing your diet and environment.

Already suffered during the first years of life, a neglect absolute, because it was undernourished, basically her diet consisted of the bobbin. And yes he suffered a fracture in one of the wrists (a bone that forms part of the legs), when I was very young. I had a fistula (damage) in the jaw by the hook that they used in the circus to manage it,” she says.

Authorities of the capital say that the space and health of Ely have improved

According to Lewy, the conditions of the two elefantas are different, and rejects that Ely has a chronic disease, in the skin or related to osteoarthritis, because, he says, the animal came in with diseases that have been treated, and doing exercises daily to improve your health, without the need to move it to another space. “Ely is an elephant happy,” he says.

Ely is not in a condition to put it to sleep. Has been evaluated by experts in elephants. The hostel was fully refurbished to be able to cater to the specific needs”, says the coordinator of zoos, who explains that the elephant has a space of earth and turf, “pad” to reduce the impact of cement on their paws, but only in “their fourth of the night” and in a part of the area of the display. In addition, we put a stack of water so that it can be cool.

“You do not have any problem to move, to feed, to swim and enjoy the environment,” says the official.

However, a large part of the space in which Ely is still living is concrete.

“You have the option of spending the day as it best suits him. You can be in the rooms at night, where it is padded, you can be in the grass, you can be in the earth”, argued Lewy. Who says “without a doubt” the Zoo San Juan de Aragon is one of the best enclosures for elephants in Latin America. Currently the zoo he lives in Ely, has around a thousand animals.

To prove that Ely is experiencing problems in your skin and legs, Paulina Bermudez organizes visits with assembly members in san salvador, can attest to the condition of the elephant at the zoo, and warn that the purchase of large animals does not represent a benefit to your health.

The last Sunday they would come with Carlos Candelaria, Party Social Gathering, but, according to the director of Great Ape from Mexico authorities, administrators of the zoo rejected the organization to engage in the visit, so that was cancelled. The assembly requested a detailed report of the health of the elephant to the environmental authorities of the capital.

The coordinator of zoos insists that, according to the diagnosis of their medical veterinary, the health of Ely has improved, and what others are mistaken in their views. “It goes far beyond the subjective perceptions of the individual, particularly, if you do not know in depth the biology of the species in question”.

Veterinary Medicine prevents and avoids the tendency, understandable but erroneous, of anthropomorphising (humanize) the animal, which should be evaluated from a point of view expert,“ warns on its position in the Sedema.

Other similar cases

This is not the first time that the organization Great Ape in the country calls for the rescue of animals that live in zoos in Mexico City. Two years ago, reported that, after the death of the oragután Jambi, his brother Toto was a serious deterioration in his health, so they asked to be transferred to a sanctuary in Brazil.

To the couple of the campaign to move to Toto in Mexico, in Argentina, a group of environmentalists demanded the transfer of the orangutan Sandra at the same shrine of Brazil.

For December 2015, the government of Argentina said to Sandra as ‘ a person not human”, and acknowledged the intelligence and sensitivity of these animals requires treatment worthy of it, but your transfer is not yet authorized. However, the argentine government allowed last April that the chimp Cecilia spent her last years at the sanctuary of Brazil, under the argument that it was “unlawfully deprived of its freedom.”

Despite the fact that Douglas Cress, coordinator of the Association For the Survival of the Great Apes of the UN, recommended that the government of the capital the transfer of Toto, who has spent his entire life in captivity, the orangutan continues in his cage in the Zoo of Chapultepec.
