Two K-9s join Burlington police, bringing total to five – The Times-News – Burlington Times News

Burlington police have added two canines to the force, giving the department a total of five working dogs.

Gunner is a 1-year-old German shepherd-Malinois mix. His handler is Officer Jason Comer, an 18-year veteran with the department. Gunner is Comer’s third working canine.

Koda is a 2-year-old German shepherd. His handler is Officer Carley Swiggett, a two-year veteran with the department. Koda is Swiggett’s first police canine.

Both teams are certified with the International Police Work Dog Association and are assigned to patrol. The dogs are trained in narcotics detection, tracking and handler protection.

The dogs were purchased from NC K9 of Wilson County. Handlers and dogs completed nine weeks of training through NC K9 in Alamance County.
